Sometimes all a space really needs is a fresh perspective instead of a full renovation, and my half bath is the perfect example of that. Before, our downstairs bathroom felt very plain and unfinished. The light blue walls, dated sconces, and ornate mirror didn’t really reflect the cozy, collected look I wanted for our home. But instead of gutting the space, I decided to work with what we already had and focus on small changes that would make a big impact.
Half Bath Before…
What I Kept
One thing I love about this makeover is how much we didn’t change.
I kept:
- the existing vanity
- the shelves
- the countertops
- the tile flooring
These pieces were all still functional and in great shape, so there was no reason to replace them. Instead, I focused on cosmetic updates that would completely change the mood of the room while staying budget-friendly.

Paint Completely Changed the Vanity

The biggest transformation came from painting the vanity and shelves. I chose a rich moody green that instantly added depth and warmth to the space. The paint color that I chose was the same color that I used in my laundry room makeover. It is called Cast Iron by Sherwin Williams.

It’s amazing how paint can make older pieces feel custom and high-end. The darker color grounded the room and paired perfectly with the vintage-inspired elements I added later.

Wallpaper Added So Much Character
The wallpaper truly brought this bathroom to life. Before, the walls felt flat and lacked personality. Once the wallpaper went up, the entire room felt cozy, layered, and intentional. Powder rooms are one of my favorite spaces to use bold wallpaper because they’re smaller rooms where you can really have fun with design.

I chose a budget friendly wallpaper with the cutest floral stamp design. The colors and print are exactly what I had in mind for this cottage inspired bathroom.

Swapping the Mirror & Lighting
Replacing the mirror and sconces made such a huge difference too. The older mirror felt dated, while the new woven mirror added warmth, texture, and character. I lucked up and found this mirror at HomeGoods for only $99. I also changed the lighting to these brass sconces with soft scalloped fabric shades, which instantly gave the space a more elevated and charming feel.

Those little details are what really make a room feel finished.

The Final Result

What started as a simple, basic half bath now feels warm, moody, cozy, and full of personality — all without changing the layout or doing major construction.
This makeover is proof that you don’t always need a huge renovation budget to create a dramatic transformation. Paint, wallpaper, lighting, and a few carefully chosen accessories can completely redefine a space, and honestly, I think the minimal changes ended up making the biggest impact.
